Driving your own overland vehicle, you will be guided literally into the heart of Baja for custom experiences unavailable to casual tourists:

  • Private beach camp and a welcome seafood meal under palm-frond palapas;

  • Exploring an ecologically unique volcanic island;

  • Venturing into a wild Pacific coast region to explore an indigenous Cochimi seasonal hunting and gathering camp and the San Borja lava flow, where we’ll enjoy watching whales, sea lions, ospreys, coyotes, and grey foxes;

  • Private camp at a date palm oasis and orchard with a talk on local agriculture and architecture of the mission town;

  • Overlanding 4WD deep into the Sierra de San Francisco to a private ranch where we’ll have a guided hike to Cuesta El Palmarito, the oldest cave art site among the Gran Mural Cave Art Complex (a UNESCO site); talks on Baja California ranching culture; and a barbacoa feast;

  • A night at the rustic eco-lodge (showers!) at Tres Virgenes volcanic complex and exploring the geology, including pigment sites used in the cave art and a demo on making paint from local pigment;

  • and end at a former sea turtle research camp on the beach in Bahia de los Angeles.

Guides: Gabe Erivez/Baja Agave Expeditions (nature and culture of Baja with extensive network in the rural communities of Baja); Roseann and Jonathan Hanson (natural history; field arts; overland experts).

Limited to 10 vehicles - must be 4WD or AWD, Sportsmobile-size or smaller

$2800 per vehicle / one person; additional person for $675 ($3475 total); if you have more than 2, register for that option and we’ll work out a second payment option).

What’s included:

  • All excursions and guides.

  • Several group dinners and lunches ; all other meals are on your own.

  • Wild camping with limited access to showers at more developed sites.

  • Use of Swarovski Optik binoculars and field scope.

  • Skills-specific mini-tutorials in field arts such as sketching, watercolor, animal tracking, reading the weather, and using optics, as well as opportunities to learn overlanding skills.

  • Several hosted wine and beer happy hours;

Not included:

  • Insurance and any travel fees, fuel, incidentals not included.

  • Optional: for those driving north from Bahia de Los Angeles with Roseann and Jonathan, a stop at a private beach camp.

  • Base cost, one vehicle, one person – $2,800

    • Additional person added to vehicle – $675 ($3475 total)

Notes:

  • 4WD or capable AWD required (off-road tires, good clearance). Subarus will work if they meet those requirements.

  • Only small, rugged overland-specific trailers allowed.

  • Sorry, no pets; we will be visiting a federally protected area, and staying on local ranches and farms where local dogs don’t mix well with newcomers.

  • What are the arrival / departure days?

    • We depart from Calexico from a central location at 6:30 am on January 21 (we’ll provide recommended hotels). We conclude the official event on January 29 in Bahia de Los Angeles.

    • There will be an option to join a convoy north back to Calexico, with a stay at a beach camp (reserved in advance) in Gonzaga Bay.

  • What is your cancellation policy?

    • You may cancel the Corazon de Baja trip up until midnight December 10, 2025 for a refund of your payment less a $75 fee. You may also roll over your payment to another event.

  • Why do you require trip insurance for each participant?

    • This is to ensure you have medical evacuation coverage (nearly all our events are in remote locations) and that your costs are covered if we have to cancel the event due to local emergencies or global health crises. We will provide you with a link to a provider closer to the event.

  • Do you offer special dietary options?

    • This will not be possible for this event.

  • Do you allow pets?

    • Sorry, we cannot accommodate pets.
