New Overland – Field Arts Baja Expedition
Registration is now open for El Corazón de Baja - Overland and Field Arts Expedition - January 21 - 29, 2026 — a spectacular and exclusive overland and field arts journey literally into the heart of Baja. We’ve joined up with Gabe Erivez of Baja Agave Expeditions, who has extensive Baja expedition experience and who is a native Spanish speaker.
Driving your own overland vehicle, you will be guided on experiences unavailable to casual tourists: private beach camp and a welcome seafood meal under palm-frond palapas; exploring an ecologically unique volcanic island; a wild Pacific coast camp to explore an indigenous Cochimi seasonal hunting and gathering camp; camping among the San Borja lava flow; watching and sketching whales, sea lions, ospreys, coyotes, and grey foxes; private camp at a date palm oasis and orchard with a talk on local agriculture and architecture of the mission town; overland 4x4 deep into the Sierra de San Francisco to a private ranch where we’ll enjoy a guided hike to Cuesta El Palmarito, the oldest cave art site among the Gran Mural Cave Art Complex (a UNESCO site); talks on Baja California ranching culture; a barbacoa feast; a night at the rustic eco-lodge (showers!) at Tres Virgenes volcanic complex—explore the geology, including pigment sites used in the cave art (we’ll also do a wild pigment paint-making session); and end at a former sea turtle research camp on the beach in Bahia de los Angeles.
Guides: Gabe Erivez/Baja Agave Expeditions (nature and culture of Baja with extensive network in the rural communities of Baja); Roseann and Jonathan Hanson (natural history; field arts; overland experts).
