Every Wednesday: Nature Journaling in Tucson

Hosted by Sue Hildreth at Tohono Chul Park in Tucson — every Wednesday

When: Wednesdays 7-8:30 am

Where: Meet just inside the entrance, and pick our spots from there.

Bring your paper, sketch or paint supplies for this free public regular event. [There is an entry fee to Tohono Chul Park if you are not a member.]

Instructions:

Find a “sit-spot” where you can focus on what you want to sketch or paint.

As you get settled focus on your senses.

What do you see? What do you hear? Is there a breeze?

Take a few calming breaths and focus inside you. What do you feel? Don’t resist whatever happens, become the silent witness.

Pick something to draw and/or paint. Choose a landscape, a vignette, or focus on a plant or garden structure.

Consider documenting some basic information. Where are you? Date. What is the latitude, longitude, altitude? What is the weather? Temperature? What is the sky like (cloudy, clear, etc)? What time is sunrise & sunset today? Moon phase?

Start your sketch and/or painting.

Consider these starter phrases: I notice…. I wonder…. It reminds me of…. Did you enjoy doing this?

Consider coming back to the same spot and drawing/painting something a little different, or the same thing after the seasons have moved along a bit. Join us at our future sessions.

Tohono Chul Park: Nature, art, and culture

IMG_4146.JPG

Join Olivia Carey (Tohono Chul docent and Nature Journal Club member) for a morning in the Gardens at Tohono Chul. The rains have triggered the barrel and pincushion cactus and ... everything to bloom! We'll meet at admissions at 8, when the park opens. On a Monday, we will have the park mostly to ourselves.

The Bistro will be closed, so be sure to bring a snack, along with the usual desert needs - hat, water, etc.
I have a number of guest passes for those who aren't members. Let Olivia know in the comments if you would like one - first come, first serve.

PLEASE NOTE: This is a public, unaffiliated group. Anyone who attends is responsible for their own safety and health and well-being. By attending you acknowledge you are accepting all risk! Thank you!

Hummingbirds and Trogons in Madera Canyon

203992742_167042852063937_8826375396598431279_n.jpg

Join us for the inaugural meeting of the Southern Arizona Nature Journal Club!

We'll be gathering at the parking area at Madera Canyon at 7am on Sunday, July 18th. From there, we'll make our way up the creek trail to the viewing area at Santa Rita Lodge, where Roseann will set up her spotting scope so we can take turns viewing and sketching hummingbirds and other feeder birds.

Others might want to explore up the creek for Trogons and other summer birds such as Yellow-billed Cuckoos and Red-Faced Warblers.

What to bring:

- field sketching kit and way to carry it on easy walk, though it can be up and down a few hills
- chair for early lunch, if you like, when we gather (in case the picnic tables are full and also we want to stay socially distanced)
- something to eat; we’ll bypass the potluck type sharing for now, until we’re farther away from the pandemic
- hat and/or sunscreen
- plenty of water!

We’ll stay within the area between the Picnic Area and the Santa Rita Lodge so people can find us wandering around.

IMPORTANT PARKING INFORMATION

Please park in or across from the Madera Canyon Picnic Area:
